The eXtended reality (XR) technology
The eXtended reality (XR) term used to describe immersive technologies
that can merge the physical and virtual worlds. According to Marr (2019),
the technologies available currently are augmented reality (AR), virtual
reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), and XR will be mainstream in the next
five years. XR technology will give customers the ability to try before
they buy. The XR collects and processes vast amounts of data along with voice
activation and sophisticated visual display (Marr,2019).
According to Pomerantz. & Rode (2020), “The XR technologies were
proving their value to education and Exploring the Future in higher education.
Individuals and institutions have been involved with XR deployment on campus and
identifying the open questions and problems that need solving. EDUCAUSE
has published three reports on XR, which demonstrate that XR is an effective
technology for active and experiential learning. XR helps promote
student engagement with learning materials and deepens student interaction with
complex problems. XR technology also promotes engagement with the XR
technology itself (Pomerantz. & Rode,2020)”.
The XR technologies are
challenging, and the forces that are making more challenging are evolving
technology and cost. The evolving technology is constantly changing.
The XR technologies have hardware-platform dependencies that make it more
difficult to adjust with software or hardware updates. The cost of
implementing the technology is very high, which needs to come down
for innovations.
